Someone help with scientific notation: (3.4 x 10^3)(2.8 x 10^8) Is it 9.52 x 10^13?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9.52 x 10^11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the poweres get added

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, thanks! Can you help me with this one? (5.8 x 10^-6)^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that you have to add the powers but scientific notation still is confusing for me...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah it is very confusing just need to practise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the 2nd one i get 0.058 which is 5.8x10^-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once again you just add the powers 10^-6 + 10^4 = 10^-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you can find and use the 10^x button on the calculator then practice that.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

multiplying is associative meaning that the order in which you multiply is not important: 3.4 x 10^3 * 2.8 x 10^8 -------------- 272 x 10^(3+8) 68 ---------------- 9.52 x 10^(11) since the left part is already in good decimal form there is no need to adjust it :)
