how have cancer cells changed over time

Cancer cells have accumulated mutations over time that have allowed them to replicate and divide when a normal cell would go through apoptosis (the cell suicide pathway). These mutations allow cancer cells to divide more rapidly, produce mutant enzymes, and grow without attachment to the extracellular matrix along with many more possibilities.
