You need to split it into two equations. First one we'll just ignore the absolute value: 4x-11 <5 4x<16 x<4 Second, we'll negate the 5 and switch the sign to compensate for dividing by -1: 4x-11>-5 4x>6 x>6/4 x>3/2 Therefore, x>3/2 and x<4, or 3/2<x<4.
