with packet transmission question! Confused!? Here is the question: A packet is transmitted over a communications link. Calculate the following: A. What is the average number of bits required to send a packet of 1000 bytes, when the transmission link has a bit error rate of 7 x 10^-5? B. What is the least number of bits required to send a packet of 1000 bytes, when the transmission link has a bit error rate of 7 x 10^-5? I have so far this: P(min) = 1/1000, so min takes -log(1/1000) = 9.96578 bit to encode. P(max) = 999/1000, so max takes -log(999/1000) = 0.00144 bit to encode.
