Well... I can think of one definite example. Perhaps little more than a year ago, Iran underwent a revolt. When the government shut down established networks of communication for rebels, they decided to take to the Internet, using Twitter to communicate. You can google for more details, but I think that would be a great example of how social networking has helped with political movements.

Also, look at how effectively the Obama campaign in 2008 used social media (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace...) to communicate, energize supporters, and politically advertise. When you compare his online campaign to McCain's... there's absolutely no competition. Obama realyl effectively used the Internet to his advantage, which helped him win the election.
