Louis XVI execution and the death of Marat
I don't really know too much about the death of Marat (other than the painting of him dying in his bathtub), so I can't really help you too much there. :S As for the execution of Louis XVI... the French revolutionary government found him guilty of treason. At first at the beginning of the French Revolution, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were quite "supportive" of the Revolution. However as things started to get a bit more radical, too much so for the tastes of Louis XVI, they tried to leave the country secretly. They were, however, caught by the revolutionaries, and thrown into jail. This disloyal act really peeved off the French people, enough so that with the use of the guillotine, performed the act of regicide and executed Louis XVI (and later his wife, Marie Antoinette).
Watch the movie Marie Antoinette with Kirstin Dunst ;) Don't know how historically correct it is however...
thanks!
