The National Convention convicted Louis of treason, but some of the Girondists argued that the king be let free. The Constitution of 1791 protected the monarch from any penalty other than dethronement. There was a huge debate whether the king should be executed. The monarchy has been in France for over centuries; there would be a great danger for France to over through their own monarch. Austria and Prussia  threatened war against  France if they chose to  over take the monarch. Prussia is known for their powerful army, while France lacks on army proficient. Louis XVI was brought to trial on December 26, 1792, and the National Convention voted for the execution of Louis XVI. On January 23, 1793 Louis XVI was sent to the guillontine. His last words spoken on the day of his execution, "I forgive those who are guilty of my death." Cheers of joy was heard around France, but cries of melancholy was throbbed through his wife's voice and loyalists.
