The King of France was known as an uncertain man who was easily manipulated. Louis XVI was rumored multiples times about his depression positioned as King. He complained about the debt France had, and was puzzled where he stood in France. At the beginning of the French Revolution, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were quite supportive of Revolution. However, as the Revolution started to get more radical; Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette tried to leave the counrty secrealty.They were caught by the revolutionaries, and thrown into jail. The National Convention convicted Louis of treason, but some of the Girondists argued that the king be let free. The Constitution of 1791 protected the monarch from any penalty other than dethronement. There was a huge debate whether the king should be executed. The monarchy has been in France for over centuries; there would be a great danger for France to over through their own monarch. Austria and Prussia threatened war against France if they chose to over take the monarch. Prussia is known for their powerful army, while France lacks on army proficient. Louis XVI was brought to trial on December 26, 1792, and the National Convention voted for the execution of Louis XVI. On January 23, 1793 Louis XVI was sent to the guillontine. His last words spoken on the day of his execution, "I forgive those who are guilty of my death." Cheers of joy was heard around France, but cries of melancholy was throbbed through his wife's voice and loyalists.
