I am good @ algebra, but terrible at word problems? should I bother to continue studying maths if I cannot apply it to real situations??

Sure! You just need to practice! That's the easy part. If you're good at math, you'll get it. It comes with practice and understanding. The more you understand why 2+2=4 the easier it will be to apply it to real life.

basically it is finding the correct variables and terms from the sentence, (translating the sentence into algebra)

oh. that's pretty hard to explain that here. well, what i did was practice and understanding the topics, and asking my teacher how he got it. serious group study will work too. :)
