The ER, Endoplasmic Reticulum, is vital to the production of proteins destined for secretion, namely rough endoplasmic reticulum is very abundant in cells with a high protein secretion. The rER gives the cell the capability to produce proteins directly in to the membrane enclosed vacuoles that make up the rER, through the many ribosomes that are directly attached to it. By producing these proteins into the rER, the cell needs not enclose the proteins further in order to secrete them, since vacuoles that bud off from the rER fuse with the cell membrane, thus secreting the proteins. The Golgi apparatus is also often abundant in cells with a high protein secretion, since it plays a large role in modifying proteins.
