What does water contain that makes it such a special substance? I mean, what makes it so essential for life? What does water contain that makes it such a special substance? I mean, what makes it so essential for life? @Biology
water has hydrogen bond. it's also a universal solvent in which substances required for the cell existence are dissolved or suspended. life exist because of the unique physicochemical properties of water or it can be considered as medium of life.
Look at its role in the Calvin Cycle. When water gives up its electrons, it makes food for plants and air for us (loosely-look at the cycle).
Adding to the first answer, it is also very unique because it is the only substance that is able to exist in three different states! Gas, liquid and solid.
All matter can exist in three states. We just happen to encounter water naturally in three at normal earth temperatures.
