have you ever noticed small, thin hairlike rootlike things spreading out from the "bottom" of a mushroom? that's it! mycelium spreads into the ground (or whenever the fungus lives) and now and then it produces a "fruiting body" over the surface (your mushroom!). have you ever noticed that mushroom always grow in groups? that's because they are the fruiting body of a single mycelium. of course things are much more diffucult than this, but that's the idea.
