Anton Van Leuuwenhoek was the first person to observe a living cell under the microscope. He also discovered bacteria. Robert Hooke was the first man to observe dead cork cells.
Robert Hooke further developed the compound microscope, including the use of the iris diaphragm. Hooke kept a detailed record of his observations. he first described cells (or rather plant cells) in his description of a slice of cork he observed under the microscope. He described it as . . . all perforated and porous much like a honeycombe. . . The pores or cells. . .consisted of a great many little boxes. . .
