|dw:1319868025239:dw| ok... i'm guessing... the minute the mechanism stopped, the hot air balloon would stop raising... then gravity takes over and the air balloon starts to fall toward the earth during those five minutes... there is not a real way of calculating without given speed of the balloon at the moment the mechanism failed but we can use symbols and letters. let v be the raising speed of the balloon at the moment the mechanism failed let y be the distant it is away from the earth. and use one of the kinematic equation to see what is going on within that five minutes... this is under the assumetion that acceleration of the balloon is constant. or you can use conservation of momentum and energy as well for this problem. but i'm not 100% sure because i have not done the calculation yet, these are just suggestions on how i would approach this kind of problems.
