With scientific notation, the power that 10 is raised to indicates the number of places the decimal is to be shifted - a positive power is to the right, negative to the left. For example: \[\Large 1.53 \times 10{^4}\]\[\Large =15300\]Here it has been shifted to the right 4 places. \[\Large 5.89 \times 10{^-5}\]\[\Large =0.0000589\]And here it has been shifted to the left 5 times.
