1.to conduct blood to the main arteries. 2.the aorta is is an elastic artery (together with a few main arteries as tributaries), as such the recoil of its walls serves to dampen the pulsatile flow of blood from the heart. remember - in capillaries the flow is usually continuous, not pulsatile). 3. on the aortic arch are also located baroreceptors (pressure receptors) that help to regulate blood pressure. 4. from the root of the aorta the two coronary arteries arise, and hence the aorta supply blood directly for the heart itself
