Let x = 0 and -2 (both are less than -1). Substitute that into y = x + 2 and see if it gives a true statement. Do the same for x = 1 and 3 (both are greater than -1) and see if y = x^2 gives a true statement. "True statement" means "does the y coordinate match the ones given?". Hope this helps.
