For ps5: I'm having trouble figuring out how to terminate my program with the raw_input "." I can't get the program to recognize the period... Is there a trick here?
ex:
word = raw_input("enter word")
if word == ".": return "game over"

basically I'm doing something like the above but, while I can assign "." to a variable I can't get my boolean to make the connection... Thanks ahead of time.

What is it doing when '.' is input?

nevermind.  I figured it out.  I had the order wrong on my booleans...  I was missing the 
if word == ".": return...
because the prior statement was catching it.  Dumb miss.  I actually caught it as I was typing in an explanation on here.  Go openstudy.  Thanks mutley.
