would it then be meiosis 1 during the independent assortment in metaphase I? or would it be meiosis 2 where the sister chromatids separate? I guess that is where i am stuck.

Probably when they seperate because they could take the wrong path and cause abnormality.

where the sister chromatids separate or the homologous chromosomes? seems like either could cause malformation if there was an abnormality in the number of chromosomes
