In school, we are taught to learn formula off by heart and apply learnt methods. even thought this does help me to pass my test/exams. I don't feel I truly understand mathematics.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree, that's a very bad approach to learn mathematics. It's actually make you formula dependent and hence too abstract to get the real feel of the subject ..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what can I do. I am really interesting in find out why and how these formula and proofs exist.

Too be honost I was the same way throughout highschool, especially in trig/precalc. Im now a sophmore college student in Calc II and Im suffering because of that I feel. In my opinion the best way is too practice practice practice. Try the harder questions in the book and they mostly will challenge you and force you to think abstract. Also use google to find out proofs for each formula your given. That will really help you

First thing is to study from a good book.Books really matter, good books will motivate you to learn more where as books written only to serve formulas and proof could give you depression ..

@ foolformath, will the Babylon method of solving square roots help me with solving radicals?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@invin, do you think it would be a good idea to read books on classical mathematics?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Babylonian won't but newton's would..
