...computers to sense the medium (Ethernet) in which they will transfer data, to see if there is anything being sent at the current moment. If such is the case, they wait until there is nothing being sent, and they start transmitting (while continuing to listen for collisions). If a collision is detected, a 'jamming' signal will be sent. A jamming signal tells every machine that there has been a collision and there should be no transmissions for now. At this time, every machine start a timer at a random value, when this timer runs out, they can start sending again. (CSMA/CD - Carrier Sense Multiple Access / Collision Detection)
