You have 244 feet of fencing to enclose a rectangular region. What is the maximum area? a. 3717 square feet b. 59,536 square feet c. 3721 square feet d. 14,884 square feet

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(244/4)^2 i believe

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a square is the maximum area you can get in the rectangle family

ok.. thx!

you can prove that by writting the perimeter in terms of the two sides , say 'a' and 'b'. then forming an equation from the area formula and the perimiter formula in terms of only a or b. then by diferentiation finding the maximum area. and you'll be able to prove a=b somewhere along the line and show the max area is for a square. can't be bothered doing it now though :p
