it is a membrane structure throughout the cell. you won't see it on most microscopic pictures - it has no solid structure.

It has place on many lipid synthesis and enzyme processes of the Golgi Apparatus in the Cell. It has no joined ribosomes.

The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is a cell organelle that doesn't contain ribosomes unlike the rough one.
