how does a white blood cells structure help it perform its function? how does a white blood cells structure help it perform its function? @Biology

OpenStudy (turingtest):

White blood cells structure are quite varied, and different kinds have different functions. I will list a few options: The flexibility of the plasma membrane allows bacteriophagia and increases mobility in pursuit of invaders. Beta cells put out chemical antigens to eliminate invaders chemically. Various white cells display proteins on their plasma surfaces to communicate the composition of the pathogen. White cells (unlike red blood cells) have a nucleus, which allows the synthesis of new chemicals in response to various invaders. There are many more, but I hope this suffices.

uhm, do u have any info on how the surface area to volume ratio helps it?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

hmm... well white blood cells tend to have a higher surface to volume ratio then other cells because the are more amorphous. That would lead to an relative increase in plasma membrane, which contains receptors for identifying antigens. So the white blood cells may be more receptive to detection of antigens due to a higher surface-to-volume ration.

OpenStudy (turingtest):

This also helps facilitate bacteriophagia and allows a more rapid release of antibodies.
