how do i know if these are linear or non-linear? a) A=s^2 b) y=5x-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If a variable is squared then you would be talking about a quadratic and not a linear model.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is from my textbook " 2. Determine whether each relation is linear or non-linear. Explain your decision."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so which one has a squared variable in it? and which one doesn't? with only powers of 1 you know you have a linear relationship.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which what has a squared variable? which number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a or b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so a does not describe a linear relationship. It describes a quadratic relationship.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b however is an equation of a line because its independent variable only has a power of one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so basically if any variable has an exponent greater than 1, its not linear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CORRECT!!! :-D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANK YOU!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you're welcome. Glad to help. Can you give me a medal so people know I'm helpful, please? :-D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks I'll be on more often. This is awesome!!!
