A monomial is an algebraic expression consisting of a single term. You cannot have any addition or subtraction.
Examples:

5x^3
-7xy
2

Examples that are not monomials:
4x - 3 (two terms)
xy + y (two terms)
3x^4 - x^3 + 2x - 5 (four terms)
The individual terms are monomials.
4x, -3, xy, y, 3x^4, -x^3, 2x, -5
