ARPANET was the original implementation of a packet switched network in the US, so that's usually my stock answer. And that's the answer most people will accept. Some people contend that it is the "Intergalactic Computer Network" or some such like that because of conversations that happened in the early days. However, I don't think there was ever a physical implementation of the Internet with that name. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)
