OpenStudy (chriss):

you can solve for a unique y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

explain?

OpenStudy (chriss):

for every x value, the function can only return 1 y value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that is another way you can determine if the relation is a function?

OpenStudy (chriss):

yes, it is the same principle behind the vertical line test, but it doesn't require you to draw a graph to determine if the relation is a function.

thank you!

OpenStudy (chriss):

you are welcome :)

Graph the relation. and draw vertical (real, or imaginary) lines through it. If any line passes through more than one point, it is not a function. If you want to do it algebraically, plug one function 1 into the x of function 2 and simplify, and then plug function 2 into the x of function 2 and simplify. If both simplify to x, it is a function.
