OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let the original salary be x The first month: 0.8x The second month: (0.8)(1.2)x (0.8)(1.2)x = 240 x = $250 So original salary is $250

OpenStudy (aroub):

From where did you get 0.8 and 1.2 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

These can be confusing. think of it as S- 0.20 S where S is the salary this simplifies to 0.8S

OpenStudy (phi):

similarly, a 20% raise is S+0.20S= 1.2S

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.8 is the cut of 20%, so 1-0.2 = 0.8 1.2 is the rise of 20%

OpenStudy (aroub):

Ohh! Okay. Thank you :)

OpenStudy (aroub):

I have one more question if you can please help me.. I'll post it now =)

OpenStudy (phi):

Also, notice that a 20% cut followed by a 20% raise does not get you back to your original salary. That can be confusing!

OpenStudy (aroub):

Yeah! Well, the word problems in general are sooo confusing! And thanks :)
