Essentially this problem is asking us to find the distance between the two points on the parabola whose y coordinate is -.25. So let us replace y with -.25 and solve: -.25 = .25(5x^2-12x+3) -1 = 5x^2 -12x+3 (divided by .25) 5x^2 -12x +4 = 0 (added 1 to both sides) (5x-2)(x-2)=0 (Factor) x = 2/5 or x = 2 From 2/5 to 2 is 1 3/5 and that is the width of the ditch 1 3/5 m
