Has anyone read, The Glass Castle and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn? Can someone please give me ideas for an ideal topic appropriate for a comparative essay? THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!!
Similarities: Jeannette's father and Francie's father are both alcoholic. Jeannette and Francie both lived in poverty. In the book, Glass Castle Jennette even references Francie's life as similar to hers because they both lived with hardships. Their lives are realistic and relevant to many people. Jeannette and Francie are both loved dearly by their fathers. Differences: Jeannette's mother, Rose Mary is so pessimistic, ignorant and very weak-- emotionally and mentally. Whereas, Francie's mother, Katie is strong, determined and neither optimistic and pessimistic-- she's realistic. That's all I could really think about... Please help me with topics to write for my comparative essay... Thank you so much for taking the time!!
Also, a similarity between them is that although they lived in poverty, and struggled to make their ends meet-- they became successful in the end.
What question do you want your essay to answer?
What do you mean?
Why do you want to write an essay?
I've been assigned to write a comparative essay from two books I like for my ISP (Independent Study Project).
what is the difference between the books?
well for one, Jeannette's life was so hectic, so different from many people, and surreal that sometimes I couldn't believe it really happened.. o.o
While Francie's life is somewhat relevant to some people I've known.. like it wasn't that surprising.
So you're comparing the characters of the two books?
oohh.. o.o I guess i am..
Why have you chosen to compare the characters?
I've chosen to compare the characters (especially the main ones) because they are the main characters of their story and it was fairly easy to talk about them?
Why not compare the themes in the books instead, and then tie the differences between the themes of the books to the characters?
how do I do that? D:
I don't know; I haven't even read the books! See if this guide helps: http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~wricntr/documents/CompAnalysis.html
ohhh.. LOL, alright. thank you!
