12x=50x-20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get everything except why we divide by 2 at the end

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12x=50x-20 20+12x=50x 20=50x-12x 20=38x x=20/38=10/19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you don't

OpenStudy (anonymous):

collect the similar terms then solve it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12x=50x-20 -50x+12=-20 -38/-38 = -20/-38 x= 20/38 divide by 2 = 10/19

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You divide each component by 2 to reduce the fraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks , do you always have to do that when you get these type of questions?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

whenever you have a fraction, you should always try to reduce it in the case of 20/38, the GCF of 20 and 38 is 2. So this means that you can reduce and you do so by dividing each component by this GCF 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh that makes more sense , thank you !! :)
