OpenStudy (geometry_hater):

Classify a triangle with the side lengths of 15, 36, and 39?

OpenStudy (geometry_hater):

is it a right obtuse acute or cannot be formed?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

are you familiar with some of the well known right-angle triangles?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

e.g. the 3, 4, 5 triangle?

OpenStudy (geometry_hater):

not a clue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a right triangle. 39^2 = 15^2 + 36^2

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

ok, well there are a set of fairly well known right angled triangles. 3x4x5 is one 5x12x13 is another if you look at the sizes given to you, you will notice they are all a scaled up version of the 5x12x13 right-triangle

OpenStudy (geometry_hater):

what do you mean by scaled?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

15 = 3x5 36 = 3x12 39 = 3x13

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

you can often solve problems like this by spotting patterns like this and avoiding any calculations.

OpenStudy (geometry_hater):

ahh ok i see now thanks!

OpenStudy (asnaseer):
