I don't know assembly, but maybe you could translate this algorithm into assembly.  I'd keep track of the number of characters printed (really, just keep track of whether I've printed anything or not).  And before I print any digit I'd check to see if the digit is 0 first.

If this digit is 0 and I haven't printed anything yet, don't print.
If this digit is 0 and I HAVE printed something, print it.
If I'm at the end of the data and I haven't printed anything, print a 0.
