OpenStudy (karatechopper):

anybody else notice openstudy getting pretty slow right now? @The OFFICIAL EFC …

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

Working fine for me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, it took a long time for an answer to get posted.

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Working smooth..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you using google chrome?

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

mine is getting slow in my typing and loading

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

yea i am using google chrome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because more people want to get the answer than work on that !!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm also using google chrome so maybe it was a temporary problem with the browser.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Typing is the confusing thing. So it takes longer for characters to appear in the text box?

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

no i was like typing this post and it was slow and then i was typing an answer and it was slow and now it is pretty fast with me so it seems google chrome is having a harder time

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

exactly shadow

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Some super simple questions of kindergarden level often were posted, so ... people are getting bored on this site.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Long post times aren't “normal” per se, but they do happen when there are a lot of people being active (i.e., chatting, posting questions, posting replies, etc). They're usually inconsistent, in that you'll typically see some post quickly and some post more slowly, depending on what the server is dealing with at the particular moment you post.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes I noticed that too.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

But yeah, you're not the first to report issues where actual typing gets slow, and that's much more unusual. Does reloading the page help? It's possible as you stay a long time, because chat messages and questions accumulate, that you end up with excessive memory usage and that slows down the computer and the browser. Still, that would be unusual.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

(We have some things in mind that we can do to help mitigate that particular issue, we just haven't implemented them yet.)

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

reloading doesnt help i noticed tht its slow right now by a second or two for me right now!

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

I haven't noticed anything direct in Chrome. I mean, the typing is a bit delayed - but not by much. Almost as fast as on other sites.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

what r ur plans if u dont mind me asking?

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

We can only bind the most recent chats and questions. So unless you scroll, the only ones that are showing are the ones you can see. When you scroll, we start inserting the ones you couldn't see before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no problems with typing, only it takes a long time for anything to get posted.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Right now if you stay on the site and 800 people post questions, you'll have 800 questions in your questions list. This would make it so you would still only have 20-30, but as you scroll we'd load up the others.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Ok. Yeah, those are unrelated. The typing ones are issues in the actual browser; I'm going to have to try and look into those. The posting ones are issues on the server, or potentially with your connection (in that the post has to the server an then back).

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

They're a bit tougher to resolve, but hopefully aren't too common.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

well i have noticed they are pretty common on typing lots of peepl say

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

Really? I haven't seen it. For example, this whole conversation has been pretty fluid for me. I hit post and it's done in milliseconds... hmm.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

mine take like 10 or some times a minute but minute is rare

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

... 10 seconds? Jeez. That's terrible.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

That has to be an internet connection issue, I think. Let me see how much data one of these requests involves.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

k

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

karatechopper, just curious, are you on a home internet connection or university or school connection?

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

home cuz i am at home

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

900 bytes up, 1.5 K down. Not a huge amount we can necessarily do to compress that much. You're in India, right?

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

no i am in USA i am in oklahoma! but i am FROM india

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Ah, gotcha. Well then. There goes my clever theory about the data having to travel around the world x_x

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

haha nice try

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Ok, well, I have to bail at the moment. But I'll definitely look into some of that. It may be just a slower connection dealing with all of the stuff coming in from chats, other people's questions, plus your replies and such. We'll have to see.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

k, and i was curious, does openstudy have their own buliding?

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

We don't, we work out of an office in the ATDC building in midtown Atlanta.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

o cool my uncle lives in norcross and so how do u earn? is it a non profit organization

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Nothing yet, but we have clever plans. We don't intend to be non-profit, but we also intend to always provide the basics of OpenStudy (i.e., the stuff you're using now) for free. Circumstances may change that, but we're fairly confident that won't be the case.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

And now, I'm out!

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

is tht next to georgia tech?

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

It's on Tech campus actually :)

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

my uncle is studying there right now!

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

!! Epic!

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

All but one of us (soon to be two of us) are either current or former students of Tech.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

hmm what r u gonna learn from there like any more degrees?

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Seriously though, I have to get out of here. My mother's preparing an epic paella and I need to get to my car and then to my parents' house 8-)

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

I finished my CS degree a couple of years ago. Peace out!

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

ccool have fun talk l8r bye
