how can you tell when two unlike fractions are equivalent?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

a/b = c/d when ad = bc So for example, 1/2 = 3/6 because 1*6 = 2*3 (both equal to 6)

hero (hero):

Set them equal to each other then cross multiply. If their values come out to be equal, then they are equivalent

hero (hero):

So does 2/3 = 4/8 ? Let's find out: Cross Multiplying gives 12 = 16 , so no they are not equivalent. Does 2/3 = 6/9 ? Cross Multiply: 18 = 18, so yes
