is v/4 = -8 equal to v = 12?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

no, because 12 divided by 4 would be 3, not -8.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

you need to think of a number that, when divided by 4, will give you 8. then simply put a negative sign in front of it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know what I did, I accidentally added the 8 to the 4 instead of dividing. So the solution is -1/2?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

no. ok, what is 4 times 8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

32

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

right, so 32 divided by 4 gives you 8. so your answer should be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we might be on the wrong page... the equation is 4/v = -8 Multiply v by both sides, which gives me 4 = -8v divide both sides by -8, which simplifies is -1/2

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

correct, but that does not match what you typed up in the question above :-(

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

so, if the question is:\[\frac{4}{v}=-8\]then the answer is indeed:\[v=-\frac{1}{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, that was the question. Sorry for the confusion; thanks so much for you help though!

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

no problem - we all make MISHTAKES :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha!
