When using Kirchoff's rules, my book says that it's ok to arbitrarily choose the direction of current. I'm wondering why this is true and if there are any limitations to this. I assume I need to at least be consistent in some way, but I'm not really sure how to tell if I'm being consistent for circuits with multiple loops.
