Name the two forces that act on a body when it says at rest on a horizontal surface. a) Identify the type of each force. b)What can be said about the magnitude and direction of these forces? c)what is the net effect of these two factors?
b) is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction right?
yes :)
If a body is at rest, then the net forces acting on it must be zero, otherwise it would be accelerating. Newton's First Law.
a)Gravity and the Normal force Gravity I think you can explain yourself The normal force is the force of the surface acting upward to counter the gravitational force, resulting in a net force of zero. As James says this accord with the equal-and-oppsite reaction bit.
Hmm.. okay thanks! =D
|dw:1321481270202:dw|here N is the force of the table pushing upwards on the object. Even though it is drawn from the center of the object it is, of course, coming from the surface of the table. because of all things said above we wind up with \[F_g-N=0\]which means no net force, which means the object stays at rest (or at least does not accelerate).
