Genetic engineering can be used to create more productive strains of farm animals used for milk and meat production. By adding genes to an animal’s DNA, the animal can be made to be more resistant to common infections. This can reduce the need to administer large doses of antibiotics to the animals. Do you think that this type of genetic engineering should be pursued? Genetic engineering can be used to create more productive strains of farm animals used for milk and meat production. Sure why not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what do you think will be the main effect of exposing such animals in nature?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they die

the thing is that it's a never ending cycle. I like genetic engineering to the point where you make an organism more energy-efficient or more water-efficient. but you have to establish those bacteria-resistant animals, which might take you about 20 years (!). the bacteria which cause infections will have plenty of time adapting to the changed conditions, putting you in front of a new problem: fighting against resistant bacteria strains. this is why I think that we should rather overthink our consuming habits and put a greater effort into genetic engineering in plants than in animals.
