Lysosomes function in normal cell life by degrading proteins the cell doesn't need anymore. The pH inside the lysosome is very low, so proteins transported there denature and are broken down by special pH resistant enzymes in the lysosomes.

Lysosomes also function in normal cell death, apoptosis, when a lot of their contents are released into the cytoplasm and go to work breaking down proteins in the cell.
