It's kind of hard to elaborate how this works, but basically, since the denominator is two, you need to find out how many times two goes into eleven (how many pieces of two can you break eleven into?
11/2 =

Seen here, eleven can be broken into five pieces of two, with one half left over.
2/2 + 2/2 + 2/2 + 2/2 + 2/2+ 1/2

2/2 equals 1, so....
1+1+1+1+1+1/2

Add it all up, and you get...
5 1/2
