Is -2^4=+/- 16?

OpenStudy (across):

Any number elevated to an even power will always be positive.

OpenStudy (across):

(unless you're dealing with complex numbers xd)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-2)^4 = 16 but -2^4 = -16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are two operations in -2^4 = -16: the exponent, then the multiplication of -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(\sqrt[5]{-32})^4\]

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

\[(\sqrt[5]{-32})^4=(\sqrt[5]{-2^5})^4=(-2)^4=16\]

Thank you asnaseer! :) What about x^4+9=90? That would be x=3?
