Hi, I have the following question: What is the electric potential φ if the electric field is a constant? Given equation: E = - grad φ . Should I integrate? over x? Help! Thanks

OpenStudy (jamesj):

It depends on the other symmetry here. If radial symmetry is in play, then if E is constant, then φ=Cr where r is the radial distance. If E is constant in the x-direction, then φ=Cx Of course you can also add any constant to these potential fields as they disappear under the grad operation.

thanks james!
