in consists of hydrogen and carbon. do you want to know oxidation states? well, then it is +1 on all hydrogen atoms, -3 on the edge carbons and -2 on the ceter carbons. these are NOT ions, though.

here, too, there are two possibilities. imagine water. if you go by the number of atoms, hydrogen would be prevalent. if you go by weight %, oxygen would be. same goes for hydrocarbon atoms. by number, hydrogen is prevalent. by mass, carbon is.
