Is life an inevitable consequence of complex chemistry? Is life an inevitable consequence of complex chemistry? @Biology

OpenStudy (turingtest):

Highly debatable, but I'm going to say no, it is not inevitable. There is much complex chemistry that does not give rise to life (geology, astronomy, metallurgy, etc.) Sort of depends on your definition of "complex chemistry" though.

Considering the sheer size of the universe, and the fact that life on earth is made up (mostly) of the most common elements in the universe, don't you reckon it MUST arise eventually?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

What I reckon isn't that important. This question has been brought before some of the greatest minds known to science and is still debated ruthlessly. There has even been equations written that predict the probability of life forming elsewhere in the universe which are hotly contested. Check out some of these pages to see the variety of responses that geniuses and idiots have proposed in equal fervor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox http://creationwiki.org/The_odds_of_life_forming_are_incredibly_small_(Talk.Origins) http://www.evolutionfaq.com/articles/probability-life or just a general Google search serves to tell the tale: http://www.google.com/search?aq=1&oq=probability+of+life+&gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=probability+of+life+on+other+planets+equation#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&source=hp&q=probability+of+life+forming&pbx=1&oq=probability+of+life+forming&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=27791l29267l0l30549l7l6l0l0l0l0l865l2497l3-2.1.1.1l5l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=caa04b27b8edc9bc&biw=1024&bih=655
