You are using 0.05 gallons per mile of a SUV gas tank that holds 16 gallons. Write the linear equation for this problem in y=mx+b form. Note: this equation has a negative slope (m)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

y=16-.05x maybe

OpenStudy (blues):

Think about the problems instead of posting them. Your dependent variable, y, is the amount of gas in the tank. It is decreasing at 0.05 gallons per mile. It is decreasing as you burn gas and therefore the coefficient will be negative. You start with 16 gallons in the tank. Therefore you'll get, y = -0.05 x + 16

OpenStudy (amistre64):

your gas tank holds a constant amount; the only thing that changes, or is variable, is the amount of miles you go

Haha blues I was screaming the same thing in the beginning until I was blue in the face - people generally come here for "right now answers" rather than "the theory behind it so I can solve it myself in the future." As frustrating as it is sometimes.
