I would point two reasons: 1st) The needing of some kind of "matter" to be "waved". At that time scientists knowed that waves always traveled in a mean. (sea waves=water / sound=air). So it was necessary a mean to carry the eletromagnetic waves (the light).

2nd) It was necessary a referencial system to measure the velocity of the light traveling from the far stars to the earth. Could someone let me know if I'm wrong?
