What is meant by [Ne] in [Ne]3s^2 3p^1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ne is the noble gas, it means you start from Ne and go on . the element they have put is Al.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is the noble gas configuration. If you need more of an explanation, write back & I will try to help asap. Hope this helps!(:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I just write Ne is the noble gas. They are asking Ne, so do I mention Al

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Ne is a noble gas, yes but when you say [Ne]3s^2 3p^1 the Ne is the 'shorthand' version of saying 1s2 2s2 2p4 as it is the nearest stable electron configuration.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They have given you the Noble Gas Configuration. When doing this, you can pratically start where the Noble Gas is and start the electron configuration from there. If you have anymore questions, do not hesitate to ask. Hope this helps ! (:
