What is the length of the edge of a cube if, after a slice 6 inches thick is cut from one side, the volume remaining is 400 cubic inches?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lwh=v l=w=h for a cube as its' sides are all the same size?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does this help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

l=w=h=x let x = the length width and height... if you use V=BH and you cutting a 6 inch thick slice, you are effecting the height but not changing the area of the base... therefore your equation will be (x-6)(x^2)=400

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i keep getting a negative number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^3-6x^2-400=0 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do i solve for x at this point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i got it, it's 10
