What is Laplace smoothing?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

You know the answer to this. Why are you asking?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

and if you don't know, go back into the AI lectures and find it quick!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get the idea that it improves statistics by adding something...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh and normalizing the result by dividing by something else

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just don't know the difference between Laplace smoothing and Laplacian smooting!

OpenStudy (jamesj):

It deals with the problem that training data can under specify probabilities. Go to unit 5, part 13 and onwards.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's also featured in Markov Models.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

I know. But the example he gives in unit 5 very nice illustrates the problem of over fitting and motivates the introduction of Laplacian smoothing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it called Laplace smoothing or Laplacian Smoothing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I hope I don't mess up this midtern like the db-class one.
